Youth Support Worker
- Hands-on learning builds real confidence. Delivering workshops, running one-to-ones and beginning to lead activities showed Erin just how capable she'd become.
- Earning while learning eased the leap into adulthood. Adapting to full-time work grew her independence as much as her skills.
- An apprenticeship can reveal your path. It confirmed youth support is Erin's sector — and sparked her ambition to become a counsellor.
The starting point
Erin had always assumed she'd go to university. Then she saw an Apprentice Youth Support Worker role advertised at Service Six, and the idea of learning on the job — and putting it straight into practice — caught her attention. She took the leap.
The turning point
Six months in, the change was clear. Through delivering workshops, holding one-to-one sessions with young people and starting to lead activities, Erin realised how far she'd come and how capable she was. The mix of discussions, essays and hands-on learning — all while working practically — helped her build genuine skills and take on real responsibility for young people's safety and wellbeing.
The result
Learning while earning boosted Erin's confidence, independence and her transition into adulthood, and she's proud of how quickly she adapted to working full time. The apprenticeship confirmed that youth support is the sector she wants to build a career in — and inspired a longer-term ambition to become a counsellor.
