Children and Youth People's Workforce

A professional in the children and young people’s workforce supports the development, wellbeing, and care of children and young people in a variety of settings. They play a vital role in early education, youth services, and family support, adapting their approach to meet individual needs and promote positive outcomes at every stage of development. 

  • These qualifications are intended to develop knowledge and skills related to the children and young people’s workforce in early learning and childcare, social care, and learning development and support services.

 

  • The qualifications consist of mandatory units covering child development, health, safety and safeguarding, equality and inclusion, child health and first aid, and good childcare practice. Optional units allow learners to tailor the qualification to their roles and interests.

Qualifications

The Early Years Practitioner Level 2 Apprenticeship is designed for those beginning their career in early years education and care, supporting the development and wellbeing of babies and young children. It covers key areas such as safeguarding, child development, play-based learning, and promoting positive behaviour, ensuring apprentices gain the skills and knowledge needed to provide high-quality care and education. This qualification provides a strong foundation for a career in early years and offers opportunities for progression into Level 3 Early Years Educator and beyond.

Level 3 is for those wishing to further develop their career in childcare and potentially move into a more senior role. The Early Learning and Childcare pathway meets the qualification requirements stated in the Early Years Foundation Stage Statutory Framework, and the Social Care pathway meets the National Care Standards requirements. At Level 3, workers gain an in-depth knowledge of childcare and development and are expected to promote good practice in all aspects of their work.

The Level 4 Children, Young People and Families Practitioner Apprenticeship is for those working directly with children, young people and their families to achieve positive and lasting change. It focuses on developing the knowledge and skills needed to provide effective support, safeguard vulnerable individuals, and promote resilience and wellbeing. Apprentices will learn to work across different services and settings, building strong relationships and delivering high-quality care and guidance. This qualification prepares learners for specialist roles within childcare, youth work or family support, with clear opportunities for progression.

Qualification Embedded

This nationally recognised qualification is embedded within the apprenticeship and develops core knowledge and applied skills across safeguarding, emotional development, communication, and partnership working.

It develops the leadership and management skills required to oversee practice, manage resources, and ensure effective safeguarding. Apprentices will learn how to inspire and guide others, drive improvements, and deliver positive outcomes across services. This qualification prepares learners for senior roles in childcare, youth work, or family support and provides strong progression into higher-level management positions.
